Interactive dialogue
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs organises an interactive dialogue with Dutch civil society organisations and other relevant partners between May and September 2008. The kick off has taken place during a meeting on Thursday 22nd of May, 2008.

Tasks ‘North’ and ‘South’

What can we say, in the light of enhanced capacity of Southern civil society organisations and the globalization of 'civil society', about the role and division of labour between Northern and Southern civil society organisations?

What was discussed during the start of the dialogue?
Has capacity really increased in the South, and if so, what are the consequences? The assumptions related to 'improved capacity' need to be more subtle. There needs to be attention and space for context-specific cases. How can we strengthen positive developments and overcome negative ones? How will the role of Northern civil society be influenced by the strengthened capacity of Southern partners? Are we prepared to place responsibilities and tasks in the South? Are we willing to let the organisations in the North become smaller? What is the new role for Northern partners in the North?

Questions for this forum:
1. In which manner have Southern organisations been strengthened in recent years (for example service delivery, accountability, cooperation, sustainability etc.)? Do you have concrete examples? Could you clarify the context specific factors and/or the possible contradictions?

2. What influence did this have on the working methods and cooperation between Northern and Southern organisations?
